How I Switched Into A Marketing Career

I came into the field of marketing after being an elementary school teacher for two years. After realizing I wanted more career growth opportunities, I turned down a teaching job in August 2019 and pressed “reset” on my career path.

At the time, I wasn’t quite sure of what I wanted to do. After dipping my toes into various fields through professional development, and after applying to jobs all over Seattle that I thought I might be interested in, I decided to contact a professional recruitment service. I was matched with a wonderful woman named Cheryl (who I am still in contact with today).

A week after I initially spoke with Cheryl on the phone, I drove to her office to meet and to discuss my goals and aspirations, my personal background, what I was looking for in an employer, and any specific requirements I had in terms of salary, benefits, and so on. I shared my reasons for leaving the teaching professions, my life growing up with parents in the construction industry, and so much more during our 30 minute meeting, and Cheryl immediately had a potential match in mind.

Fast forward to a week and a half later, and I had officially accepted a job as a Marketing Assistant/Office Administrator for a PNW residential and commercial construction company’s Seattle office. It was the perfect match – we always had some kind of construction project going on in or around our home while I was growing up, so I was familiar with construction terminology and processes. I viewed this job opportunity as a great first stepping stone along my new career path.

As I started learning and growing into my new role, I became more excited about marketing as a whole. I took a deep dive into the company’s social media content and the company’s ads and analytics. Using the company’s Google Ads account and other platforms, I started tracking new data points for the business, was able to create and publish social media content, and also began tracking overall market data to analyze how the company was doing in terms of search and sales based on market performance and search queries. Much of this work was done while working from home during the coronavirus pandemic and was done as more of a side project in addition to my usual tasks.

I was also lucky enough to be able to learn on the job. I’ll be writing more about the resources I came across in my next blog post. Thanks for reading about my experience! How did you get into the field you work in?
